Writer's Block: Your Username

Ceirdwen's device (c)

Why did you choose your user name? Is there any special meaning or story behind it?

Submitted by [info]lilbananapie

It is literally Ceirdwen ferch Cadwaladr, the name I chose as a member of the SCA many years ago, and decided to go back to it for internet anonymity.  Technically, it is Lady Ceirdwen ferch Cadwaladr, a 12th century Welsh widow living in the Perfeddwlad under the rule of Llywelyn Fawr, Prince of Wales.  Most of my flist knows this already, but I thought if I put it here, some old friends may remember my name (or my device shown above) and make comment.
For those that may not know (because I get asked all of the time), the SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, and it is a group of historical re-enactors (specifically re-enacting the good parts of the Middle Ages) who spend their free time living and having feasts and fighting demos, but we leave the plague and poverty at the door of history.

If you had to immigrate from your current home, where in the world would you choose to go?

Come on, friends.  Do I really need to answer this?  If I were forced to emigrate from my current home, I would move to Wales, specifically North Wales, and then I would be forced to learn to speak Welsh and would be in my happy place of inspiration - see icon.  I really should have been born Welsh.

Are you prepared for a zombie outbreak, or are you just going to wing it?

View other answers

I thought that I was actually prepared for this, but in speaking to my husband, he said that I have not bullets or any other kind of ammunition, so I'd be screwed.  Vampires - 50/50 shot.  Zombies and werewolves - we're fucked.  I'll have to get back to you on alien invasions, depending on planet of origin.

What makes you feel better when you're mad?

Submitted by [info]kimmayeisblack

Slamming things - doors, cabinets, toys, books, frying pans.  I also like to throw shoes.  And curse.  Like a truck driver.  Or fanfiction writer.  And I sulk.  And sometimes cry.  I am so pleasant to be around when I'm mad.  You meant angry, right?  Not just mental because that's a whole other ball of wax.:-)

Try to describe yourself in one sentence.

One sentence could not possibly do justice to the vastness of my personality; the simple, yet complex nature that is me, self-deprecating and humble that I am.

Writer's Block: Where your memories began.

What is your earliest memory of your life?

View other answers

I was about two, and there was a bird outside of our apartment window that was intriguing me.  I opened the window (there was no screen), and the bird came inside.  It was not so intriguing flying around the apartment, so I jumped up and sat on the kitchen table while my mother chased it around the small place with a broom until it finally flew back out of the window.  This is probably one of my favorite memories for some reason.

What commercial do you love the most? Which do you hate?

View other answers

My absolute favorite series of commercials is for Jimmy Dean products.  It's always the Sun, getting up before dawn (of course) to make breakfast for his family because you need a healthy breakfast.  His daughter is at the counter, doing homework or getting ready for school, and the family is rushing around avoiding breakfast since they have no time for it, and he says something like, "People, I have to get up and illuminate the Eastern seaboard in 15 minutes, I think you can make some time."  They have him working in an office buildng, scheduling eclipses with the Moon, and talking about cold cereal with the Cloud ("You wouldn't understand.  It's a cloud thing.")  There's a bit with Rainbow who's watching her figure and Hail.  They are hilarious.  I can't think of any I hate, but I'm sure there must be some.  Go here for how the Sun helps the Moon rise.

If you could be cast on any TV show, from any time, who would you play?

The show would be Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and I would play anyone as long as I got to do my scenes with Avery Brooks, Colm Meaney and Nana Visitor.

Writer's Block: Inanimation

Have you ever named or befriended an inanimate object? What did you call it?

View other answers

I collect pewter pieces, and I have three in particular that have names - Ceirdwen (funny, huh?), Ladron (does anyone speak Spanish?) and Griff.  Ceirdwen's the girl with the gold flower wreath in a long skirt carrying a basket.  Ladron is a thief with a dagger.  Griff is a gryphon.  My three favorite pieces.  I've also named my second car, but I can't recall what it was.  Honestly, that relationship meant more to me than that.  Although, now thinking on it, isn't a car animated?  It does move.  I mean animated isn't necessarily alive, right?  Or are we strictly speaking in terms of cartoons, in which case, this entire post was a waste of my time.  And yours.

Writer's Block: Musical inspiration

What type of music inspires you?

View other answers

I recently told someone that my music is either 20 years old or 20 minutes old.  I love The Alarm and Flogging Molly, and when I'm writing I will listen to either of them, although the singing along gets in the way.  I love Duran Duran, U2, Depeche Mode, The Stray Cats and The Kooks, The Killers and Green Day.  My new favorites are Cold Play's Violet Hill and Ludo's Love Me Dead and Death Cab for Cutie's I Will Possess Your Heart.  I guess eclectic music inspires me.

Badly.  I scream, kick (doors), slam (again doors) and throw things (not doors).  Bummer to be a door in my house.

Writer's Block: What Time Period?

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 3:56 PM
daffodil

If you had to pick a time period to live in, which would you choose? Why?

View other answers

Medieval times, especially Britain, especially Wales (I know - you're shocked!)  I used to belong to a group of re-enactors, so I got to live this life every weekend for a while.  I would, of course, like to avoid the bad stuff, like the plague and dying before 50.  If I couldn't go back there, I really love the Revolutionary period (US).  Women didn't have as many rights as medieval times (hard to believe, I know), but I've always been intrigued by that time period and the birth of a nation.  To have lived through it must have been an amazing experience.

Writer's Block: Remembering mom

What's your favorite memory of your mother?

View other answers

Everytime we left the house, we would stand with the door open, and say "Bye Mom," and she would answer, "Okay, be careful."  It was almost always annoying, but as I got older, I couldn't close the door and leave the house until she'd say "Okay, be careful."  It didn't matter if you were going to the corner or on vacation.

Writer's Block: Shoes

How many pair of shoes do you have? Out of those pairs, how many do you wear more than a few times a year?

View other answers

This is a great question if only that I have an outline for a piece about girls' shoes, but it was about  my two year old daughter's shoes.  I will write that as a separate post found here, so I don't screw up everybody's friends' page.  I have several pairs of shoes (at least 30), but I only wear 3 - my sneakers daily (Keds leather tennis shoes or some equivilent) unless there's more than two inches of snow on the ground, and then it's my fur (read: fuzzy plastic) lined snow boots plus I have a pair of cool leather-like brown short boots that I love, but I only wear them with jeans and my long (to my knees) black sweater.  I'm actually not much of a shoe person.  Don't ask me about pocketbooks, purses, handbags, briefcases, messenger or tote bags.  This post couldn't support the length of that post.

Writer's Block: It's Too Late to Apologize

Has anyone ever done something so horrible to you that "I'm sorry" couldn't fix it?

View other answers

I had this friend in high school, who I was close to.  I told her of my intention to ask a boy to a dance.  They ended up going together.  I pushed it off as a coincidence.  He must have liked her.  Then, I had a crush on this guy in college, who I wanted to date.  I told her all about him, and she drove him the 80 miles home one holiday.  Turns out he began to date her, and she broke his heart.  He and I ended up dating for a year and a half - first real boyfriend, and all of that, and I come to find out after we broke up that she was the one who asked him out, and not vice versa.  This was even after I told her about my feelings for him.  I never confronted her.  I just broke all ties.  Needless to say, she's never met my husband!

Are you celebrating Cinco de Mayo?

View other answers

Yes.  My husband is an odd man, amusing and entertaining, but odd.  For example, we don't celebrate Valentine's Day (too commercial), but we celebrate Groundhog's Day.  Don't ask.  Cinco de Mayo is on the list of "approved" holidays, so we always go to this fantastic Mexican restaurant in a nearby town (about 15-20 miles away), but it's worth it.  Yum. (Just kidding about the approved bit.)

See I was thinking that I lost my mind
But it's been getting to me all this time
And it don't stop dragging me down

Silently reflection turns my world to stone
Patiently correction leaves us all alone
And sometimes I'm a travel man
But tonight this engine's failing

I still hear the children playing"

You said you would not accept
Your friends are laughin' cause
